This narrative confidence is the film’s greatest intellectual asset. The dialogue is a particular strength, a finely tuned instrument that captures the specific cadence of how families wound and heal one another, often in the same sentence.’

Any notion they may have wisdom to impart is soon dispelled in a wry tale of modern families that should be bouyed by its best international independent feature win at Galway Film Fleadh.

Tony-nominated actor Thomas Sadoski is attending the Galway Film Fleadh for the International Premiere of new independent comedy/drama Adult Children this evening (Friday 11th July), which he produced and stars in, as one of a dysfunctional quartet of intergenerational siblings spanning from teens to late 40s.

DIGITAL JOURNAL: Overall, “Adult Children” is a compelling film from start to finish. It will certainly spark conversations among viewers as everybody in the cast is noteworthy.

Strong performances led by Ella Rubin gives this indie movie its beating heart. Ella is convincing as the youngest sibling, and she is not afraid to be raw and vulnerable.

VARIETY: Written by Annika Marks and directed by Rich Newey, the comedy-drama centers on three adult siblings (Betsy Brandt, Thomas Sadoski and Aya Cash) and their teenage half-sister (Ella Rubin) who move in together to watch over their brother Josh (Sadoski), an addict. The film also stars Mimi Rogers as their mother and Olemich Tugas (in his film debut) as a young neighbor. Marks and Newey previously collaborated on the film “Killing Eleanor,” which won the top prize at the 2020 SCAD Savannah Film Festival. That film also balanced some serious topics with dark humor and humanity on display in “Adult Children.”

THE CONTENDING: One of the things I loved about Rich Newey’s Adult Children is the way it drops you into the story and asks you to keep pace with this family’s complex web of connections. In a world of Marvel movies and repeat reenactments of how Batman’s parents died, I like the challenge screenwriter Annika Marks throws down for mature audiences as we dive into the dynamics of this dysfunctional modern family. Keep up! Which is exactly what this family would expect you to do.
